Sorry it has been so very long since I was on here last.......I seem to have lost my ability to multi-task and manage my time well......BUT....with that said I am going to have some new and interesting topics evey week. IF there is something that you would like for me to research...PLEASE ask....other than that I will locate information that would be helpful to those of us here in the dry, windy and dusty parts of Arizona.

THAT 70'S GYMKHANA

WAS A HIT WITH YOUNG AND NOT SO YOUNG.

December 11th at the J6 Equestrian Center was a blast for all who were able to make it. Turn out was good and Care For The Horses benefited very well. Below are the final results of the over-all points.

Leadline: Sisters Kristen and Dana Webster tied with 5 points each. Both will receive a trophy.

7 and under:

Sophia Bergh took high point trophy with 10 points and brother Oscar took reserve trophy with 4 points.

8-13 age:

Aspen Padgett took high point trophy with 24 points and Cleo Borgman took reserve with 19 points.

14-18 age:

Ivey Borgman took high point trophy with 18 points and Hailly Grenough took reserve with 16 points.

19-49 age:

Katherine Calkins and Vicky Greenough tied for high and reserve with 8 points each.

Over the Hill:

Pat Arnold took high point with 2 points.

Over-all high point for the day went to Aspen Padgett and reserve high point went to Cleo Borgman.

The owners of the J6 were so pleased with the day that they have asked for us to come back!!! What a compliment for our members who made this such a success.

We Need Your Help!

Here the little guy is wearing his t-shirts that keep the flies off his open wounds. His vitals are starting to normalize and his appettite improves daily. He will need to get the teeth floated as soon as he able to withstand the sedation and the work.

A fundraiser dinner to help cover the vet costs for him is being planned for October 2, 2010 and will be held at the facilit. Please make plans to come and see him and enjoy some good food and company. Watch for the upcoming flyer and where you can purchase your tickets.


This little guy was rescued last week and has been through a very traumatic ordeal. While he has not received the best care throughout his life, the most recent event has been the worst. While he was sick with colic his owner sold him to a family that had no idea about caring for a horse, especially not a sick one. Somewhere along the line someone put a hose up his butt to make him go to the bathroom, they walked him, turned him out on fresh green grass. With open wounds all over him with flies embedded, it just became to much for this little guy to take. He went septic and at that time CFH was called to intervene by interested parties.

Within an hour of receiving him into the program the vet was on site evaluating. It was decided that he had a fighting chance however small to make it. We have been working night and day giving him fluids, antibiotics, and pain meds to help fight the raging infection within him, the ongoing fever and with alot of prayers he may just make it. It is day to day right now for this little guy. Please check our website for daily updates on his condition.

If he does survive he will need to have his teeth floated as they are in horrific condition and also will need to be castrated. We are asking for your help in providing this care by sending donations to our PO Box 884, Sierra Visa, AZ 85635.

Hay Raffle Winner Announced!

The winner of the hay raffle held on October 23rd was Ken Wendt from Huachuca City. Congratulations and thank you for your support.

***Spring clean up at the facility***

A few weeks ago we did some spring cleaning to the entrance to the facility. There were 5 loads taken out in the truck and over 20 loads taken to the back of the property to be burned at a later date. I would like to thank Scott Grindy of Whetstone Feed and Ranch Supply/Stan's Fence for his generosity of his bobcat and operator. We could not have gotten as much done without it.

Thanks to the Fry #3 Fire department and their crew for safely burning the big pile of brush for us.

Training Ponygirl

As some of you may have know, Ponygirl has been waiting for a new home since March 2009. She is a 3-4 year old Arab mare that had never been handled. She was very untrusting of humans. Ponygirl was placed in foster homes that could help with ground training, but after 9 months she still could not be haltered.

Buddy Defenbaugh who is new in the area and has training experience with similar types horses, contacted the program and arrangements were made for Buddy to take Ponygirl.

Well just after a few days, she is now haltered and has a saddle on. As you can see from the pictures, she looks relaxed and it is believed that she will be riding soon. Watch for more updates on her training.

Angel's Story

Angel’s Story
We do not have a lot of history on Angel but do know that her owner’s could no longer care for her properly. She had been found once wandering in the desert, and taken in by someone. Now she was thin and had sore feet which appeared to be from lack of care. The owner’s decided to give her away, so a Good Samaritan took her in. Now already having more horses than one needs, and realizing that she needed veterinary care a call was made to CFH for help. Of course we had to give her a chance; after all she was only 15 years old and was as sweet as could be. Immediately after receiving her into the program and evaluation was done to determine what her immediate needs were. Food was just one of those needs but the main focus would need to be on her feet. We could tell that she had some founder issues as she had great difficulty in moving around and tried to keep as much weight as she could off of her front feet. Her feet had heels that were 41/2” high. She spent much of that time laying on the ground and just moaning in pain. Right away we had a farrier work on lowering the heels a little to relieve some of the pressure from walking on her toes and put some Hoofwings boots on her feet to protect them. Dr. Prentice was called and came as soon as she was available. The x-rays taken were worse than expected. The x-rays showed that she had navicular disease, but in addition the coffin bones had actually rotated over 27 degrees and had broken off and were shattered within her hoof. A decision was quickly made to have her put to rest and out of pain as there was nothing else that could be done for Angel.

She only touched our lives for a short time, but she had the sweetest, softest eyes and did not deserve to have lived the way she had. Angel also had scars on her back from ill fitting saddles and you could tell she had been used very hard and cared for very little.

Scrap booking Supplies Needed

We are in the process of cataloging all of our kids and putting them in order so that while we are at events, interested parties may browse through and see all the great work that has been accomplished. As we all know, these supplies are not cheap by any means...so...if you have some of these items that are not being used, please call and I will come and pick them up.

Your Help is Needed

We need your help to pay for the needed feed for the mamas and babies. Please help provide mare supplements or junior feed to these guys. You can purchase the feed at any feed store and tell them it is for Care For The Horses and contact Ann Jost at 520-559-2224 and arrangemnts can be made to pick it up.

If you would rather come and see some of these horses and drop off the feed then that can be arranged also by calling the same number.

4 Mares with Babies

At this time we have placed 3 sets of the mamas and their babies. Two sets have moved to new homes in Tucson and 1 mare went to a 4-H home and the filly to a home with many other horses.

Chica and Rocky are still available for adoption. They are now halter broke and ready for some ground training.

Recently we took in 4 Mustang mares with their babies that were headed for slaughter to Juarez, MX. Heart of Tucson along with another rescue facility purchased the mams and babies for $150 a pair.

The horses are now in foster homes where they will be gentled and trained so they can be adopted to new and forever loving homes.
